In December 1999 Katja, the breeder of Højmarken's, came to Denmark to celebrate Christmas and since she was going to stay near my home, I desided to go for a visit, to see her and her cats, who came with her on her holliday.
I especially wanted to see Afjord's Flamme, or Smukke (Beauty in English) as Katja calls her. Behind Smukke is a lot of danish bred cats and since she was so beautifull on the pictures I had seen of her, well then it would be interesting to see her in real life so to speak:-)
I thought that she was very beautifull indeed and booked a female from her first litter, with Tigresan`s Peo as the father.
Canberra is from Katja`s I-litter, but since her parents mated the first time during the opening ceremoni for the olympics in Sydney, Katja felt that one of the kittens would have to be named either Sydney or Canberra:-)
Canberra was a very beautifull kitten, but most importantly she was a very happy and harmonic kitten. She loves to be in my outside run and even when it is cold outside, she is out there as long as she can take the cold:-) After a while she will come back in again, but she isn't inside for long before she goes out again:-)
In the evening it's cozy time. She wants to lay on her favorite pillow, who is right beside me on the couch, and then I have to slowly cuddle her on her stomach. She will tell me if I do it to fast:-) During the evening the pillow gets crowded, but in despite Canberra is staying there and she will tell other, bigger, cats with a paw or two, that she WANTS to be on that pillow:-) At the age of 11 months she weighed 3.8 kgs, which I thought was a fairly good weight.
She has been shown on occasion and that has gone fairly well.
Canberra has had a difficult time becoming pregnant and has also had rather small litters, ranging from 1 - 2 kittens, and in the litters there was 2 kittens, she has lost 1 kitten within a week each time. When Pocahontas was 6 weeks old, Canberra went into heat and I asked my vet if it would be a good idea to have her bred, to see if it would be easier for her to become pregnant and perhaps have more than 1 - 2 kittens. Canberra became pregnant with Leo, a breeding I've always been interested to see the outcome of and on June 22 our U2-litter to the world! 3 kittens were born and Canberras future breeding carrer depends on the survivel of all 3 kittens.
We had decided to neuter Canberra, after she has been to some shows where she hopefully will get her last certificates to become a Grand Intenational Champion. We will probably show her once in a while in the neuter classes.

As part of the HCM project at KVL, some of our cats was asked to come and give bloodsamples and also be scaned for HCM. Canberra was one of the cats we entered the project. When she'll be scaned again is not sure, because we don't know yet if she'll be followed through the project at KVL or if she'll be scaned under the "normal" procedures we follow. More info will be added as we get it.

The researchers has asked us if we will bring Canberra back for
a re-scan next year. Not because there's something wrong, she has a
healthy
looking heart, but because they want to follow some "older" cats and
see
what happens to their hearts as they get older. Of course we have
agreed
to let them see her again.
